San Bruno, San Mateo County
Tanforan, now a shopping center site beside the BART station in San Bruno, was a horse racing track from 1899 to 1964. In 1911 aviator Eugene Ely took off from its infield and made the first landing of an airplane on a ship. In 1942 the track was used as an assembly center for Japanese Americans forced from their homes, an episode recalled by a memorial there.
